The Jacques C. Shure Religious School
Over the past 30 years, Congregation Jewish Community North has provided a caring and nurturing environment for our children’s Jewish learning. From being in rented spaces to our current building, the commitment to Jewish learning has prospered. The Jacques C. Shure Religious School, named after Jacques C. Shure, a congregant extremely supportive of giving our children a Jewish education, is the place where all this happens. Our principal, faculty, Education Committee and parents contribute their time, support, and efforts in creating innovative and meaningful learning experiences for our children in both Hebrew and Judaic studies. Your child’s formal Jewish education begins in pre-school and goes through to Confirmation. Our post Confirmation students have the opportunity to become teacher assistants in their 11th and 12th grade years.
“Camp Aviv” meets on Sundays during the regular school year from 9:30 am – 12:15 pm. Hebrew classes follow for those preparing for B’nai Mitzvah. Contact the synagogue office at 281-376-0016 or via email at principal@cjcn.org
B’nai Mitzvah
This warm religious experience is one of the most remembered life cycle events in the lives of our children and their families. Becoming a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a process that takes commitment and time. It’s not the end of a Jewish education, but a milestone in the creation of a Jewish way of life. At Congregation Jewish Community North, we personalize the Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremony to embrace the special meaning of this life-cycle event for everyone.
Prior to becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, each candidate receives extra mid-week Hebrew instruction as well as individual instruction from the Rabbi. Please refer to our Bar/Bat Mitzvah Handbook for details.
Our Congregation has also sponsored a number of special and very moving adult B’nai Mitzvah classes and ceremonies.
Confirmation
10th graders are invited to participate in our Confirmation program which involves Torah, Avodah and G’milut Chasadim. Confirmants study with our Rabbi, gather together for dinner monthly, mentor younger children and participate in leading services and work on community service projects together.
Adult and Family Education
Judaism is the way of the student and we seek to involve all ages and levels in lifelong learning. From programs such as “Learner’s Services” where each part and prayer of a worship service is explained, to Rabbi Siger’s nationally recognized “Torah on Tap” program, Shabbat Dinner programs and ‘field trips’ to performances and exhibits together, we are confident that every member of our congregation can discover something new and exciting to inspire and inform their Jewish life.
“There are obligations without measure, and their reward is without measure, and study of Torah is equal to them all, for it leads to them all”
