Jane Kliakh andler joined Congregation Jewish Community North as Cantorial Soloist in August 2007. Born in Korosten in the Ukraine, she completed music school with honors, specializing in the violin. Her family emigrated to Israel in 1990, where Jane finished high school and attended Tel-Aviv University, studied opera singing, and graduated in Economics in 1998.
Jane’s many migrations in the Diaspora began after her marriage in 1996 to scientist and educator, Igor Kliakhandler. In 1998, they moved to Berkeley, California, where Igor accepted a post doctoral position. Igor’s next posting was in Chicago, where their daughter Elizabeth was born in 2001, and where Jane studied music and opera singing, giving occasional performances.
In September 2001 Igor took a Professorial position in the Department of Mathematics at Michigan Technological University (MTU) in Houghton, Michigan. Jane studied at MTU, completing her Master of Science in Economics in 2004.
In Houghton, Michigan, Jane served as Cantorial Soloist for Temple Jacob, while also performing several times each year for Studio North Opera. In 2006 (and again in 2007), she attended the Reform movement’s Mifgash Musicale for Temple musicians at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. All along, her love for Cantorial singing increased and she received encouragement from her congregation, the staff of the Mifgash Musicale, and others who heard her.
Jane and Igor arrived in Houston on January 1, 2007, where Igor took a position in an energy trading company. Jane immediately renewed her Cantorial studies, this time with Cantor Vadim Tunitsky of Temple Emanu El. When Cantor Tunitsky heard that CJCN was interviewing Cantorial candidates, he recommended Jane for our pulpit. We thank Cantor Tunitsky and welcome Jane Kliakhandler (who invites you to call her simply “Cantor Jane’) to CJCN.
