The rabbis offered many explanations, but the one that is most often advanced is that the Torah was given in a place where no nation could claim it exclusively. It was given to the Jewish people for all of humankind. The Jews are chosen to serve as "a kingdom of priests," teaching the Torah and preserving its holiness.
