Simchat Torah

torah_a.gifHow rich we Jews are! We have been granted the greatest treasure of all time, the Torah, a visceral symbol of the covenant that binds heaven and earth. Like careful guardians, we open it a crack to read from it each Sabbath, then wind it tight, cover it up, and return it to our Holy Ark.

But even the most careful guardians should have some idea of the full extent of this precious possession. That is why, this Simchat Torah, we opened the Torah from end to end--with the whole congregation as witnesses. The result was a renewed appreciation of what we have undertaken to guard and what we have promised to pass on L'Dor VaDor,  "from one generation to the next."

An awed Congregation looked on as Rabbi Seymour Rossel read from the Torah. From the beginning to the end and now at the start of a new year, a new beginning.

Kids at the LibraryTo read a book for the first time is to make an acquaintance with a new friend; to read it for a second time is to meet an old one. ~ Chinese Saying

Please come and make some new friends at the library.

Our library is open and filled with excited children discovering the joy of reading wonderful Jewish books. Students from Pre-K though 2nd grade have already come in to enjoy story time and to check out books. All children in grades Pre-K through 4th grade will enjoy a monthly story and weekly book check out time.  The first story the students enjoyed was Because Nothing Looks Like God by Rabbi and Karen Kushner. The book posed the question, "How does God do his work?" The answer was that God needs our hands to do his work. The students then created a mural with their hands so that we would always remember how important we are to God's plan for us and for the world. It was so wonderful to watch such enthusiastic library patrons!

Please don't let your children be the only ones to use our beautiful library . We have a treasure trove of literature for all to enjoy! Just fill out the card from the back of the book and drop it in the brown box, I'll do the rest!

Shalom and
Happy Reading,
Sue Sobin
